There was a time ... No Future

There was a time when punk was at its top, 1977, the year of my birth. Never thought that it was an interesting time concerning music but what happened just after was definitely ! “Rip It Up And Start Again” explains brilliantly these post punk times. Written by an ex Melody Maker journalist, Simon Reynolds, here’s the perfect description of what succeeded to the punk storm from 1978 to 1984. The beginnings of John Lydon alone with PIL, the US industrials Devo & Pere Ubu, the changes in the british music industry with Mute & Do It Yourself, the arty scene with Talking Heads & Wire, all the bands from Sheffield & Manchester, Throbbing Gristle, the No Wave NY scene, New Pop, Synthpop … everything you always wanted to know about this period is filled in this great book which will make you go back into your discography and also discovered things you’ll never supposed to exist ! One advice : Go & buy it ... or steal it ! That would sticks perfectly with the suject !

Nowadays in France we live a strange situation, you may hav' noticed if u're abroad, we have a president, Nicolas Sarkozy who is qualified of "bling bling". Never thought we'll be in this situation. The worst is that the press is getting completely mad about him and more precisely of his private life. Today an interview of his new bling bling wife was published in "L'express", I read it one minute ago and i thought that France is really turning wrong. Hopefully there's one man who understands everything ... our savior, enjoy !

Pale blue eyes ... full of tears

Sad sad sad news, just after the fantastic story of Jerome Kerviel here's another great one from the financial area. I do think it's even worst than the Societe Generale scandal cos' it touched one of my teenage idol, just read this ... and cry on the gool old rock n' roll

For once this article is not in english as it was written by Nathalie Leruch

Taste the snails !

One of the main reason which made me want to throw parties was to share a good dinner with some of my heroes. Havin' the time to exchange about music & life and sometimes discoverin' really touching guys. One of the man I had a very special time with is Billy Nasty. He came to visit us on December 1st 07 for a Dviason night and blow our headz with a crazy set and a crazy "coup de fourchette" as we said here. Being in France makes it easier as we've definitely the best food in the world and as real frenchies we're always proud to offer a great meal to our guests and believe me it's fun to make taste some snails to a brit pal ! Billy we want u back !

Here are recordings of this Dviason night, Billy played from 3 to 5'30 and then we played back to back with Lutezo till the end (expect dark minimal from us at this kind of hour ...)

I choosed my way, so I think ...

RIP

A very special mix from Ivan Smagghe and Tim Paris, now based in London with another great french producer Danton Eeprom. They fomed together the "bancale bancale" studio, let's hope some genius stuff. They will be at rex Club on 2nd of february, so do I !

Batcave Groove

Gorgeous footage by Lidia Terki of Chloe "Be Kind To Me", from her debut LP "The Waiting Room".
Electronic music on album format is most of the time boring, only few tracks to really get mad on, no coherency, no story to tell but Chloé definitely did it brillantly !
You can only fall in love with this bancal electronic folk, right from Kill The Dj, 2 steps ahead in the mental and deviant groove !

God Only Knows

It's well known that all alone you're nothing except a selfish cunt. Nobody to tell you when you're wrong, nobody to rest your head on its loving shoulder, nobody to share your joy and desilusions with, nobody, ...

Next tuesday it will makes 9 years I'm with the girl I love. We spent our 20's together and now we're entering the 30's, the love affair goes on !

No better way to describe my feelings that the best love song ever : "God Only Knows" from Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album, still makes my heart bleeds at every listening

"I may not always love you
But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
Ill make you so sure about it

God only knows what I'd be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

God only knows what I'd be without you"

Spleen from The Hague

Hard time for the vynil junks, winter break for the distributors, perfect time to look back into your cherished collection. On your marks, get set, go !

1st step : Weep the dust, throw the empty botlles of biers, clear the numerous ashtrays, reals and improvised ones.
2nd step : fill the right plates in the right covers, possibility of freaking out on that point realising you lost some of your treasures but don't worry at the end of the cleaning you'll find them back.
3rd step : Yeah ! Listening time ! Fuck the neighbourhood !

Here's my rediscover, "Holographic Voice", a fabulous track made by dutch producer based in The Hague I-F, with Nancy Fortune on the vocals

http://www.djdownload.com/mp3-detail/I-F+ft+Nancy+Fortune/Holographic+Voice/Ghostly+International/300515

Released in 2002 on the Tangent : Disco Nouveau compilation of excellent US label Ghostly International, another track touched by the grace of darkism, full of aridity and only danceable suggestively in slow motion.

Impossible to mention I-F without speaking of one of the best webradio of the world, fans of the dutch electro sound, IDM & Italo Disco here's a pepit for you :

Turn SM with the VU

"Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather, Whiplash girlchild in the dark"

The Velvet Underground, my all time favorite band, the soundtrack of my teenage wet dreams.
Here's a famous remark, often attributed to british genius Brian Eno : "while only a few thousand people bought the first Velvet Underground record upon its release, almost every single one of them was inspired to start a band".

1 good reason to become a dj

There are lots of reasons for becoming a dj, as we're on my personal blog and as I want it to be honest & personal i'll give you one of mine (hopefully i have others) : revenge on guitar players !
Maybe you already experienced this situation : bein' around a fire camp, cruisin' a girl to spend the night with, findin' one, talkin' & laughin' with her about things you're not interested in but hey that's the game. Hour after hour your masterplan is set up, you get closer to her, you see in her moves and her eyes that something's happenin' and then ... this motherfuckin' guitar player starts to play !!! Always the same crap songs from Nirvana, Led Zep, Telephone, ... Everybody's singin' except you as you noticed the changes in the attitude of your "supposed to be" nightlove which is now hooked to the pale copy of Kurt Cobain. Crazy how a guitar makes people look beautifull ... so it's the same thing with turntables ! Time for a revenge !

NB : look at the TREX cover from his awesome album "Electric Warrior", does it remind you something ? Yes the Justice album, hmmmm copycat !

Fear & Loathing in club backstages

There was a time I used to do interviews & vynil reviews for the famous belgian website http://www.theclubbing.com/. Reading it 3-4 years after they were realised was really fun to me so let's bring them from the crypt.

I sometimes feel in the skin of the regretted Hunter S. Thompson, creator of the gonzo journalism especially one time. Arriving at a crazy night with my pals, drinkin' champagne & vodka, partyin' and OH NO takin' an E as the itw was scheduled at the end of the party, but it was not ... 15 minutes after I was in a full light room with Laurent Garnier ... still laughing at it !

To check all the interviews go to :

Featuring : Luciano, Anthony Rother, Basti from Tiefschwarz, The Hacker & Oxia, Darren Price, Electric Indigo, Scan X, Spacid, Miss Kittin, Spacid, The Penelopes, Angel Molina, Terence Fixmer, Rolando, Miss Kittin, ... & Laurent Garnier.

Track of the decade

Few songs make you feel like home, "Fool of the new city" by Hamburg producers Ego Express is one of those.
Listening to a tune which was made for you, describing perfectly what you got inside of you, and how you want the music to be is a great but strange feeling. Younger i had the gooseflesh on songs like "Sunday morning" from The Velvet Underground or "Strawberry Fields Forever" from the Fab Four and since 3 years i have my personal electronic anthem. First heard on a fabulous dj mix by Ivan Smagghe & Chloé called "The dysfunctional family", bought instantly on ebay as it was already hard to find, Ladomat label never repressed it, that's the vinyl which never quits my flightcase & my thoughts.

You don't want to be like everybody else ? Warning, could be addictive : http://www.mbeat.de/catalog/egoexpress-everybody-p-8587.html

Wanna see u scream !

It's been a while my partner in crime Lutezo & I wanted to spin records together for a long long long session. Sharing our love for dark atmosphere and shooting to the other "hey you don't have this one, shaaaame".

Our insane vj, Blindoff, will also be there semi naked and protected him from our radioactive beats with its bloody mask. He's back from Pixel Festival & Rachdingue in Spain, full of new visuals, get prepared.

So the party promised to be wild in your head, ears & eyes.

If you never came to the freshly opened new club in Lille, Le Sonic, here's a good reason, great place to discover and which fits perfectly with cheek to cheek dancing and I know lots of you like that !

Sonic 46 rue d'Arras, Fri. 18/01, 3€, 23 to 7
