R.I.P Betty Page (1923-2008)

Bettie Page, gay icon & queen of the US pin ups died last thursday in LA from a pneumonia. Suffering from a heart attack she had more than a week ago, she never woke up. A legend is gone, every teenager had one day fantasmed on this 50's pin up which largely contributed to the 60's sexual revolution. Now we have porn stars or empty brains Paris Hilton lookalike, nothing in comparaison to this queen of hearts.

U have to know

Blur are back .. but not my 20's

And so, with considerable fanfare, the mighty Blur have finally reformed. If you've kissed goodbye to your 20s, as I have, and were once partial to ringer T-shirts and hairslides, as I was, you no doubt felt delighted to see the return of a quartet whose clever pop soundtracked your first teenage fumblings, and whose simple existence turned your youth technicolour.

But here's a thing: why on earth have they reformed? The simple answer, of course, is the rumoured multimillion pound cheque from Live Nation, quite a nice little earner in these cash-strapped times.

But while many bands reform to top up their pensions, surely Blur don't need to. Damon Albarn definitely doesn't. He's been raking in the simian-shaped bills thanks to Gorillaz and Monkey: Journey To The West. Alex James has been making a mint as a Classic FM DJ and a peddler of cheese. Next to them, Graham Coxon has had a decent solo career, and Dave Rowntree, ever the oddball, has been running for parliament. All those royalties for Parklife and Song 2 will have kept the four of them afloat anyway, so perhaps, as Albarn himself says in this week's NME, there really is something for them to do again.

But when he says "we've got a reason to exist", what does he mean? I've got a few theories. Firstly, today's British indie bands, with the exception of the grand Arctic Monkeys, are a rum old lot. Kaiser Chiefs' football-chant indie has lost its match fitness, Bloc Party's post-punk has gone properly po-faced, and Razorlight are so far up their behinds they're kissing their colons. None of these bands possess a smidgeon of the creativity that Blur had, so perhaps Albarn feels that it's time to lay down the gauntlet.

Secondly, maybe Blur want us to remember how different they were to Oasis and the Verve, the only massive Britpop bands still trading their goods. While the Gallaghers regurgitate Beatles references for the trillionth time, and Richard Ashcroft confuses epic sentiment for an embarrassing whine, Blur had a career that was rich in variety. I'm not saying they're faultless – an opening chord of Stereotypes or Country House, for example, can still make my bile rise. But consider the very different pleasures of She's So High, Beetlebum and Crazy Beat, and you realise, instantly, how rich their wares were.

Finally, Blur's influence is still apparent in contemporary pop. From Lily Allen's forthcoming single, The Fear, to the Wombats' daft Christmas single, I still hear the bright, sprightly Englishness that they helped make so modern. Put all this together with the band's unassailable egos – the one feature of Blur that still blots their copy book – and is it such a surprise that they're back with us? They want to return next July in Hyde Park, like the founding fathers of the music they spawned. And after all, this is how reunion etiquette works. As Blur would put it themselves, there's no other way.

Beautiful looser part 3

After Kevin Dillon & Will Ferrel, the story goes on for the beautifull loosers. Here's one really hard to beat, Mister Maurice Moss from the british tv show on Channel 4 "The IT Crowd".

Moss is the nerdiest person you will ever meet. He has all the classic symptoms: trousers too short but worn too high, bad hair, clip-on ties, very bad hair, socially inept, an interesting variety of maths teacher check shirts, and really really bad hair. He can use more TLAs than an RFC on ICT so conversation can really make you glaze over. Moss' sense of absolute logic is unendingly funny.

Moss also possesses the incredible yet useless skill of jabbing a screwdriver into the desk between his fingers at incredible speed. One miss and he'll ruin his typing speed!

R.I.P Guy Peellaert (1934-2008)

One of the icon of the pop culture died on 17th of November of this year, Guy Peellaert achieved fame as an artist who embraced the attitudes and methods of the Pop Art movement, surrealism and psychedelia. He created iconic images of rock’n’roll stars of the 1960s and 1970s, most famously David Bowie and the Rolling Stones.
His art was exhibited in Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, Cuba, Brazil and Italy.
Peellaert made his name with Rock Dreams (1973), a collaboration with the English rock writer Nik Cohn. The book meditated on the obsessions and mythologies of rock’n’roll.
Peellaert used a mix of photography, paint and drawing manipulated into collages to accompany the surreal text. He placed some of the generation’s biggest icons, from Elvis to Bob Dylan, in fantastical, bizarre, intimate and often scandalous situations : a pink satin-tinged Jim Morrison squatting in his bath, the Rolling Stones dressed in Nazi uniforms surrounded by young girls, the Beatles having tea with the Queen ... Rock Dreams sold more than a million copies worldwide.

Peellaert’s work was in vogue. He was called upon to design album covers for stars across the globe: the Rolling Stones’ It’s Only Rock ’N Roll album and David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs LP, which depicted the musician as a grotesque mix of man and dog with genitalia that were quickly airbrushed when the record was first distributed in 1974. His reputation rapidly flourished in the US as he was commissioned, on the back of his success, to design posters for some of the biggest cult films of the 1970s including Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, starring Robert De Niro, as well as Wim Wenders’s The Wings of Desire (1987) and Robert Altman’s Short Cuts (1993).

Blaesstraat legend

Will be spinnin' records at this legendary club in Brussels on Friday 30th of January with my label pal Lutezo, another dream comes true, can't wait to be there !!!

Sex, drugs & rock n' roll

Finally on line on You Tube (and easy to find on emule) the documentary shooted in the 1972 by Robert Franck about Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street Tour (definitely my favorite LP of the band). This rockumentary was forbidden by The Stones as you have numerous scenes of heroin/cocaine taking or sex orgies in planes. Nothing but what the RS were in this period.

I'm gonna be a part of it

Will realize a dream, will be in NYC from 15th to 25th of September, let's celebrate it !

The best is to listen to it and sing it as loud as you can :

Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it - New York, New York
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it - New York, New York
I wanna wake up in a city, that doesn't sleep
And find Im king of the hill - top of the heap
These little town blues, are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it - in old New York
If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you - New York, New York
I want to wake up in a city, that never sleeps
And find I'm a number one, top of the list, king of the hill
A number one
These little town blues, are melting away
I'm gonna make a brand new start of it - in old New York
And if I can make it there, I'm gonna make it anywhere
It's up to you - New York, New York

Now I know why i'm happy everyday

Scientists found that after listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting dance music, the levels of antibodies in volunteers' bodies increased.
They also found that stress hormone levels, which can weaken the immune system, decreased after being exposed to the music.
Volunteers who played a percussion instrument along with the music also benefited from the immune boost.
The researchers, from Sussex University and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, say their findings demonstrate how music could be used to help aid patients' recovery while in hospital.
In a separate, unpublished, study they also found that playing music while a patient was under anaesthetic during an operation also helped to lower the levels of harmful stress hormones.
Dr Ronny Enk, a neurocognition expert at the Max Planck Institute, who led the research, said: "We think the pleasant state that can be induced by music leads to special physiological changes which eventually lead to stress reduction or direct immune enhancement.
"Stress reduction probably plays an important role, but the stress reducing effect seems to be different for various types of music."
The researchers tested 300 people, asking them to listen to 50 minutes of happy, joyful dance music or to a random collection of tones.
They found that levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, decreased significantly in those listening to the dance music compared to the control group. After listening, the levels of the antibody immunoglobin A, the immune system's first line of defence, were heightened.
The researchers did not test whether different types of music would have different affects, but other studies have shown that personal preference for music can also influence the stress reducing impact it can have.
Dr Enk added: "We'd expect that different kinds of music might show different physiological and immunological effects. Not only the music itself is important but probably the personal appraisal of the listener will also be important. We did not use relaxing music, but rather exciting music that were joyful dance tunes from different centuries.
"Listening to music in hospitals might show benefits for patients and may for example lead to shorter recovery times, but we are still to test this ourselves."

Loco ? Si, mucho mas cada ano !

Back next week for the 3rd time at my favorite club in Spain : Rachdingue. Near Barcelona in the middle of the mountains this legendary club, well known during the 70's as all the international jet set (u know the real proper ones with Mick, Marianne and so on) was there to party every weekend of summer, is simply one of the most beautiful place i ever played. Designed by Salavador Dali, you can still feel the magic in the air there and the crowd is always hot and decadent. This year let's celebrate with dear friend Mathiu and his dad their 40th birthday ! Will be playin' with Blindoff certainely on the terrace, Pet Duo will be on the inside room ! Great to see u back on August 30 catalan people, I'm really lookin' forward for this night !!!

Lost in K Hole

I've always been really disapointed by movies about club culture but I think this one could be great. No better place than Berlin and no better man than Paul to play the superstar dj, as he knows exactly how to act like a cunt ... or like a great guy, depends who's in front. Hardly waitin' to check if it could be a generational movie (my generation ???) or a shit like some movies like "It's all gone Pete Tong"

Beautifull Looser ... one more

Please consider me as a dumb guy with a pathetic sense of humor and I'll be proud of it cos' here's one of my favorite beautifull looser. Will Ferrel, formerly known for his appearances in the famous Saturday Night Live, is definitely in the club of the hilarious actors but not the french one as the majority of the movies he appeared on arrived directly on the dvd market in my France. "L'exception culturelle" only goes in one way, so why not considering Will as Underground ? Hmmm ok I push a bit too forward I know. Hav' a look on "Blades of glory", "The Legend of Ron Burgundy" or "Talladega Nights : The Ballad of Ricky Bobby", 3 masterpieces of complete mental disorder !

So high, I Can't remember my N.A.M.E

You used to be allright. What happened ?

07/06/08, Main Square Festival in Arras on the main place of the city, 27 000 people, a magic moment ! So great to see Radiohead again in France, the last time I saw them it was on the day of the release of Kid A. The best concert I saw in my life so for this day in north of France the level was higher than ever. I was just disappointed by 2 little mistakes on "Climbing Up Walls" and "Exit Music" but hey we're all humans ... hmm no, Thom Yorke and the whole radiohead crew are not, they're much much more than that.

Brit's "News of the world" : the electronic version

A must-received for all the electronic lovers, Skrufff is definitely the best weekly e-zine you can find on web. Highly Brit orientated but hey who else can mix up news about metrosexual djs, K-hole cramps, medusa invasion in Ibiza and really interesting interviews of electronic major artists ?

Now they call him superstar

My bristol favorite artist seems definitely back with a new album called "Knowle West Boy". 5 years after his deceiving last album, it's now time to get back in business and proper sounds. 1st single is "Council Estate" and wow i predict a big smash in our head. Enjoy this recent footage at Jools Holland UK show.
They used to called him Tricky Kid he lives the life we wish we did ! HELL YEAH !

New direction

4 seasons running parties @ Kiosk with Dviason and some of the other week ends on the road spreading my vision of dance music. I must admit I felt a bit empty this last season, on the promoter side, noticing that the thrills were not as high as they were so it's the right time to focus on something fresh. I'm really excited about producing, and starting a collaboration with my mate Monoblok. The idea to work together emerged during a gorgeous after party at infamous Berlin Panorama Bar, expect the unexpected just as in this oh so particular place ... Monoblok is part of the Paysages Electroniques crew, boss of Rodoid netlabel and producer since more than 10 years performing live in various clubs & festivals, visit the following websites to know more about my partner in crime :
